7. Off Computer Activities Related to Topic

- Research of information related to topic of Australian Explorers, through internet, encyclopeadias, CD Rom, and other texts.

ie: Where did they go? What did they do? What else was happening in the country at that time? etc.

- Children will learn to write reports - teacher guided.

- Children will compare written styles between newspaper articles and creative writing.

Teacher guided and small group brainstorming activities.

- Children will collate information on the Explorers.

- Children will plan written presentations, including referencing information in an appropriate manner.

8. Computer Based Activities Related to the Topic

- Children will use word processing techniques to present information collated during their researching and report writing activities.

- Children will enter this information by touch typing if possible. Teacher will supervise closely to ensure that children really do try to touch type as much as possible.

9. Classroom Management and Evaluation Strategies

- These computer activities are designed to be done individually. Therefore, time for each child to have access to the available computer terminals will have to be rationed. Some sort of timetable would be appropriate here.

- Computer access periods would probably not exceed 20 - 30 minutes per child per session.

- Children will be monitored fairly closely in their use of the computers, to ensure that they are not wasting their time, and that they are actually completing the designated tasks in the manner that is required of them.

- Evaluation will be by direct observation of student progress, and by presentation of completed work tasks.

- Marking criterion will include: the appropriateness of the material; use of appropriate font styles and sizes; what errors, if any, there are in spelling and format; and the level of application that each child demonstrates in attempting to complete the given tasks.
