STRAND

The following is an explanation of how the strands of English relate to the software program "BOOK".

Two strands, text and Language are contained in the english curriculum. Both inolve language, listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writting. Book concentrates on the language strand prodamantly and deals with the skills in using language.

Students learn structure of written languange, contextual understanding, comprehension of grammar and vocabulary, as well as text organisation, with some help from the teacher.

Students need to develop skills in planning and preparation for writting, for example they need to brainstorm and take notes, then they need to do a draft, review it, check spelling and present the written product appropriately. Work off the computer and on the computer using "BOOK" can help develop these.

OFF COMPUTER ACTIVITIES

3.12b - Spelling tests, that can also be done on the computer with a spelling program.

Students can write about their weekends, then swap their work with another class mate, who can then proof read their peers work.

3.11 - Worksheets, handwritting exercises.

3.12a - Write a draft of their stories then proof read it before typing it on the computer.

2.9 - Their could be a class focus on a topic, which the children can discuss and brainstorm together.

This also includes the children writting their own story which latter can be typed into the "BOOK" software program on the computer.

2.12a - The students can discuss ideas with teacher or peers.

Students can read story out to class and discuss their own ideas behind it.

COMPUTER BASED ACTIVITY

After the students have made a rough draft of their story, through discussion, brainstorming, note taking etc. And they have proof read it, checking spelling etc. Then they can type it onto the computer in their "BOOK" software, using different fonts and sizes. When they have their written information in there they can then illustrate their book, add colour and proof read it again making any changes necessary, ending up with a finished book.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

The computer screen needs to out of direct sunlight. If sunlight is shining in different areas of the classroom during the day, it might be an idea to put the computer onto a trolley, this way you can move the computer to different areas of the classroom during the day, to accomadate the sunlight.

Set time needs to allocated to each child, maybe drawing up a roster and keeping it on the wall, where children can tick their name off when their time is up, therefore the teacher can see that everyone is getting enough equal time.

When a child has finished their book completely, they can highlight their name on the roster, then the teacher will know it is ready for evaluating.
