The following lesson plans are designed for a class of approximately 25. The students as they are only in prep have very basic if any at all, experience with computers and therefore, the Phonics Alive Program will be demonstarted by the teacher. Once demonstrated it is an extremely basic program and even the slowest child could easily navigate their way through the program.

LESSON PLANS:

Area of nationally developed curriculum, with strand and student learning outcomes:

All of the following outcomes could be achieved through the use of the Phonics Alive Program.

Level 1 Table of Outcomes - Speaking and Listening

Shows emerging awareness of school purposes and expectations for using the spoken language.

Draws on implicit knowledge of the linquistic structures and features of own variety of English when expressing ideas and information and interpreting spoken texts.

Participate in language experience activities involving repetition of language, its patterns and vocabulary.

Reading and viewing

Demonstartes emerging awareness and use of symbols and conventions when making meaning from texts.

Writing

Experiments with and practices ways of representing ideas and information using written symbols

OFF COMPUTER ACTIVITIES:

After using the Program Phonics Alive:

The children can create 'Alphabet Books', that is A is for Apple, B is for Ball, C is for Cat.

A book using Alliteration eg. Adam ate apples all afternoon, Ben bounced big balls.

The children can play alphabet Bingo, which is played the same way as the number bingo.

By testing the children on orally speaking the single sounds of the alphabet.

Reinforcing the software program by using the worksheets included in the teachers guide.

Basic story writing

Participate in language experience activities involving repetition of language

COMPUTER BASED ACTIVITIES:

Phonics Alive contains 19 modules, each introducing six sounds (including revisions) plus one module introducing the 'u' vowel sound therefore the children can individually work through these modules on the computer. The sequence of the modules was designed according to the difficulty level, ie from easy to hard. The skill sequence moves through the introduction of letters to sound symbol relatioships where both exercises require the students to listen carefully and then press the correct keyboard letter.

Once the students have completed the Phonic Alive Program, they can move on to the proceeding program

Match words with picture. eg. the new words learnt on Phonics Alive to pictures found on clipart.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND EVALUATION STRATEGIES:

The computer will be used on a roster basis, each student will be designated a time to use the computer and each time they use it they will complete one module.

Computer managed instruction is an important feature of this program. That is the program records the students responses and stores them in a seperate folder on the hard drive and as a result the teacher is able to monitor the students results. This can show an indivduals skill level for each component of a module and a students sucess rate throughout the program. The ability of Phonics Alive to act as a true diagnostic chart of the students ability level, and inability with certain areas of reading , can save many hours of remedial teaching.
