LESSON PLAN

AREA OF NATIONALLY DEVELOPED CURRICULUM WITH STRAND AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME:

The level of this program would be Level 3 (Grades 4-5), the mode is Operations and Computer Components. In this level the requirements for the mode are as follows:

"The student is able to put information into a computer by touch typing or dictation."

This program is to do with just touch-typing however.

This program would be mostly to do with English, for even though the program is to do with touch-typing it also helps the child to learn how to spell and also even increase their vocabulary.

The learning outcome would be that the student would increase their ability to touch type and go on with their typing maybe even going up to the advanced level. Another learning outcome that would hopefully be achieved would be that the children increase the speed of their touch typing as well as going through the different levels.

This program relates to objective 4.6 this relates to touch-typing in the way that the student learns to select and use the recognised procedure for touch typing and uses the right conventions for the use of touch-typing (Adapted from the Technology Profiles Curriculum).

OFF COMPUTER ACTIVITIES:

While their are students on the computer, the other students could be doing a range of activities, such as spelling work, or the computer could be used as a play time thing where the students are allowed to use the computer during their free time lessons .

The off-computer work could include such things as the students writing their own stories that they could publish after they have learnt the basics of touch-typing. They could publish their work in a word document or such.

As the program is one that involves touch typing there is not many activities that could be used to increase the activity on an off-computer basis.

COMPUTER BASED ACTIVITIES:

The computer based activities is really just running the software and playing the touch typing game. However, the children could also, after they had some practice with touch typing, begin to publish assignments and stories by using the right convention of touch typing.

The children would, on the computer go through the process of reaching each stage and going onto the next, more advanced stage.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND EVALUATION STRATEGIES:

The students work can be evaluated by the use of the certificates. If the student or teacher wants to see what stage they have completed, they use the arrow keys or press C, then press enter to go to the Print Certificate screen. From here the student is able to view the certificates and see what stage that they are at. To print a certificate, press enter to highlight the required certificates to be printed. If the student wishes to leave the screen without printing a certificate, they need to press ESC.

This program would be used by students in a roster system, where there would be one student working at the computer at one time. The student who is rostered on the computer at a given time, would spend approximately 15 minutes on this program probably twice a week so that what they learn the last time that they were on the computer would hopefully not be forgotten. For this program there is no noise therefore the computer would not be a major distraction for the other students.

The computer should be situated at the back of the classroom, where the teacher could see what was going on, but the other students would continue on with their own work, with no major distraction. There should only be one student at the computer at one time, as it does not cater for use by two students.
