The software package which I have chosen to evaluate is microsoft word. The reason I chose this package was because it links to the significant KITO mode. Operations means, putting information into a computer by typing or dictation. Microsoft word can be affective with practising both these things. Microsoft word also connects to the level, which is level 3, grades 4/5. Microsoft word is an effecient package when using it with grades 4/5. It isn't a difficult program to use for many reasons such as the icons at the top of the page. These are simple to use, all the student would have to do is click on whatever icon is needed, and it does what ever it is commanded to do. This makes it quicker and is alot easier to use, instead of going up to the tools icon and going down to whatever command they would need. Microsoft word allows students to type in information, whether it is for assignments, or because they are being dictated to. There is also easy access to the spelling dictionaries, which students can use to check their spelling, once they have finished their work or even if they aren't sure on a word, they can still check it while they are typing. This allows for correct and polished work, and it can help students identify their mistakes and what words they need to learn. This encourages independant learning. If students are wanting to use Microsoft word as a teahcer I would have an instruction poster on how to get into it. If they were using a Macintosh the instructions I would give are, firstly turn on the computer by the switch at the front of the computer screen, then I would tell them to turn the switch on at the back of the hard drive. Then tell them to go to the icon at the top left hand side of the screen, then drag the cursor down to microsoft word. On the page there is a help button menu, this shows children what icon does what and what the purpose of each one is. The requirements needed before installing microsoft word are; - a personal computer with 486 or higher processor - 4 MB of memory for windows 95 (8 MB recommended) - 12 MB of memory for windows NT workstation - 7 MB of hard disk space (9 MB free for installation only) - Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device All the above requirements are needed and are essential for the installation of microsoft word, for both educational usage and home usage. The prices for microsoft word and windows 95 for educational usage are; Microsoft word -$123 windows 95- $123 The prices for both with home usage are; Microsoft word- $454 windows 95-$454 Microsoft word is an easy program to change content and to add bits to it. Students can put input into the computer whether it is by dictation or typing up class projects or activities, for example showing students how to set out letters on the computer by using micorsoft word, which invloves showing students how to use tabs, margins and bullets.
