Lesson plan
1. Area of nationally developed curriculum, with strand and student learning outcome(s)
The program word 6 is well suited to the English area of the nationally developed curriculum area. The use of this program in classrooms would integrate Information Technology into the school curriculm perfectly.
Whilst word 6 may appear a little difficult for grade 2 children to use, I believe that it is important for them to explore it and become familiar with it at an early age, when thay are keen and eager to learn about computers.
Word 6 is a program which is frequently used by adults and in many businesses. It is most likely a program that the children have on computers at home, and one which they will have seen their parents, older brothers and sisters or someone else use.
For these students to have experienced this program and to use it through out their schooling years will prove beneficial as they enter higher grades and need to use the program for other areas in the curriculum.
Student Learning Outcome: The main student learning outcome is that each student can construct a text using a computer, and print it out.
The importance of this lesson is to have students learn how to use Microsoft Word 6. They will be required to type, print, and spell check a document.
2. Off-computer activities related to the topic.
The children will have written their own stories and will decide which one they would like to word process for their end of term display folders.
As a class, we will discuss the use of computers, asking questions as to who has used them for typing before, which they all will have.
3. Computer-based activities related to the topic
The children will all gather around the computer and the teacher will show them how to type and print. They will also be able to have assistance if they need it.
The children type their stories in pairs. Whilst one person types their own story, another student will be there to provide assistance. The teacher will check with the students to ensure they are going well and will help them with any difficulties.
This will be conducted over the course of two weeks. Whilst their stories will be short, the children will be realtively slow at typing.\
With the help of the teacher, the students will be encouraged to spell check their documents.
4. Classroom management and evaluation strategies
Managing the use of this program in the classroom would be relatively simple. However, It would require precise time management and most definitly the use of a chart designating individuals who can use the computer each day.
Each student will be evaluated on their ability to produce a final piece of work which they have spell checked , typed themselves, and printed.
They should also be able to explain aspects of the process which they undertook to complete this.
